Why Use Nikon Lenses On A Canon DSLR, it seems to go against the laws of the forums! the which camera is better forum Nikon or canon. Perhaps maybe the day aftyer Halloween got me thinking about the Frankenstein effect, or maybe it's just a sugar overload from all the candy.
Using a Canon DSLR makes a lot of sense for video, because and even though I am a Nikon still photographer, the truth is that Canon has won this war so far. We like to shoot with a DSLR for the types of images we cannot get from the smaller sensor video cameras. However with the mind set of buying all Canon included lenses we might be missing out on some ease of use. The older style lenses that have aperture rings are easy to control when filming with a DSLR like the canon 7D, maybe it slows you down a little bit, but that is no bad thing for producing quality clips.
Why bother with older Nikkor lenses for your brand new Canon DSLR, well if you want to do time lapse and who doesn't, it's fun and is the equivalent of photographing sunsets in the still photo world, yes it's overdone but there is still room for creativity and original thought. The manual lense with an aperture ring does not communicate electronically with the camera body, so when you set the aperture it stays stopped down, so no flicker as you might get with a dedicated Canon lens, who's body sends an electrical message on every exposure to stop down, unfortunatly the minute variations mean that the auto lenses never quiet stop down to the same point every time, enough variation is there to introduce flicker.
Like to save money, then go ahead dumpster dive, well not really but look on Ebay, or your local pawn broker (not porn), or look in the classified ads they are a gold mine of people selling "old" camera equipment very cheaply. You can pick up Nikon, Pentax which can easily be used on your Canon by getting the cheap adapters from Ebay or Amazon.
You don't want old lenses because they are not tack sharp, this is not still photography. The medium of video is never going to be as sharp as a reproduction on paper, these older lenses might be regarded as soft in still photography, yet in video they are very acceptable, giving qualities to the footage that is highly desirable by Indie film producers.
Some lenses for you to consider, the very first lens I would get and indeed did get for my canon 7D (I bought body only), was the Canon 50mm f1.4, truly a great lens value and f1.4 really is important for twilight shooting.
Nikkor AI 24mm f2.8 online auctions start at $200
Nikkor AI 105mm f2.5 / f2.8 online auctions start at $130
Nikkor AI 200mm f4 online auction start at $130
The Olympus lenses from the eighties are also worth a look and have a strong following with Canon DSLR users.
I do like prime lenses for video filming and I defiantly want aperture rings for total control, so if you have money burning a whole in your jeans take a look at the Zeiss lenses that are new and have been optimized for digital DSLR cameras, they have recently launched the Zeiss collection of lenses in a water proof case for $6,000.
