footage, stock video, b-roll,It's time to take a look at where sales are happening for footage at the moment. I contribute to a small amount of agencies due to the time it takes to upload footage. I'm also motivated to upload to an agency where sales are made quite early on in your relationship with that agency.
I am not a prolific shooter, I try and upload variable content and try to keep my portfolio pages looking interesting with a lot of variety of subjects. I do not subscribe to upload one footage clip in every size of video you could dream off, I also keep "similars" to three or four if that. My interest in video is to keep the buyer interested in variety, if buyers are browsing my portfolio pages I want to show good quality subject matter, a page of similars is going to send the buyer running. Buyers will contact you via sitemail and ask if you have longer clips or a different angle if they really need it.
As of May 2011 my best site for video footage sales is Pond5 and on top of that they are growing sales, I see lots of web advertising from them so they are using their take of my sales to grow their business. The process of advertising, increasing sales just makes you want to go out and shoot more.
In second place for sales volume is Shutterstock, they have subscription plans and they also resize footage into smaller formats, especially useful is web size for people who do not need full size HD for website use. This works well along side Pond5 as they do not offer these features.
Third place goes to iStock, the sales volume here is quite a bit less than Pond5 and Shutterstock. I have stopped uploading to iStock because of their recent changes to the commission plan, they are only paying 15% for contributors with less than 250 clip sales. This level of commission is not worth me putting footage with them, especially as their search engine is favoring exclusive contributors.
Well for me this is where my sales are coming from, I do contribute to other agencies but at the moment sales from the others have dried up. At Revostock I was doing OK and building my portfolio then the sales just stopped, I do have a small amount of footage with them around 140 clips but from the start of this year I had not sold anything until recently.

i agree with revostock, sold alright when i first uploaded, then it just died out... hvnt sold anything there in months... while pond5 is still being "somewhat" consistent
It's good to know it's not just me at Revostock, Shutterstock is doing great for video also.
shutterstock hasnt been bad, but pales to pond5... i've been surprised by that actually, I expected it to do better, considering the user base. But I feel shutterstock is king of stills and Pond5 is slowly becoming my king of vids.
I agree, but Shutterstock is still significant for video
